In a shocking case of alleged misconduct, Dallas Police Sergeant Thomas Michael Fry, 52, has been indicted on federal charges for the possession and sale of stolen firearms.
According to Chad Meacham, acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Texas, Fry is facing three counts of possession and sale of stolen firearms and an additional three counts of theft of a firearm under state charges.
Allegations Against Fry
The investigation began on October 10, 2022, when the Dallas Police Department’s Public Integrity Unit launched a probe into allegations of criminal misconduct against Fry.
Authorities determined that between August 2021 and July 2022, Fry stole three duty firearms, identified as 9mm Sig Sauer pistols, from the Southeast Patrol Division, where he was stationed at the time.
Federal prosecutors allege that Fry later pawned these stolen firearms in Oklahoma.
Betrayal of Duty
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Chad Meacham emphasized the seriousness of Fry’s actions, noting the betrayal of trust inherent in the case.
“Police officers have a sacred duty to uphold the rule of law. Instead, this sergeant betrayed his department – and his community – by allegedly pawning stolen firearms,” Meacham said.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has vowed to hold law enforcement officers accountable for violations of their oaths, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public trust in the justice system.
Investigation and Charges
The case was investigated by the Dallas Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Dallas Field Division. Fry’s charges include:
- Federal Charges:
- Three counts of possession and sale of stolen firearms.
- State Charges:
- Three counts of theft of a firearm.
If convicted, Fry faces up to 30 years in federal prison for his alleged crimes.
Public and Law Enforcement Reactions
This case has sparked concerns about the integrity of law enforcement officers. While the majority of officers work to uphold their duty, incidents like this erode public trust.
The Dallas Police Department has reiterated its commitment to accountability by investigating and addressing misconduct swiftly.
The indictment of Sergeant Thomas Michael Fry is a stark reminder of the importance of accountability within law enforcement.
As this case proceeds, it highlights the commitment of authorities to ensure that no one, not even those entrusted with upholding the law, is above it.
